Google’s Pixel 6 Won’t Have a Power Brick
While we’re all talking about the Pixel 5a, which Google just announced, the company casually mentioned to CNN that this would be the last phone from the company to include a USB-C power brick in the box. That means the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, which we expect to be the next major phones from Google, won’t have one in the box.
This will make Google the latest in a long line of smartphone makers to ditch the power brick in an attempt to cut down on e-waste. Of course, another benefit that the companies don’t mention as much is the monetary savings. Not including a charger with thousands or millions of sold devices can add up to some pretty substantial savings for the manufacturers.
Will We Ever See Power Bricks Again?
We’ll have to wait and see if this is the last straw for power bricks in the box or if other companies will continue including them.
Apple, Samsung, and Google are among the most prominent smartphone sellers globally, so they tend to set many trends that other companies follow. When you add in companies like Huawei no longer including chargers, it seems like it’s just a matter of time before getting a power brick with your phone is a thing of the past.
If the trend keeps going, it’ll be hard to imagine things going back. If we’re all used to paying extra for a power brick, what incentive is there for smartphone manufacturers to include them in the box again?
